VHERDS - Adhoi Hospital Reconstruction :: Updates

The hospital at Adhoi village, Bachaau taluk, Bhuj district was the primary health care facility for over 15,000 people in that village and 11 other surrounding villages. Like a lot of other buildings in the Bhuj district, it too suffered significant destruction in the earthquake of January 2001. The locals expressed the pressing need for expanding and improving the medical facilities in that region.

VHERDS is Voluntary Health, Education and Rural Development Society. It is a Chennai based NGO that has been so far, been doing several, successful developmental programs in villages in Tamil Nadu. VHERDS was helping to coordinate the supply of relief materials to this region and after coming to know of the needs of Adhoi and several surrounding villages, decided to also look after the rehabilitation efforts there.

VHERDS' holistic approach towards comprehensive rural development seems to have yielded very good results in Tamil Nadu. Since sustainable development and empowerment are VIDE's goals, teaming up with VHERDS which has similar attitude is beneficial. One of VHERDS' primary methodology is to take up Government sponsored programs provide quality leadership, bridge resource gap, implement in a transparent manner, involving local community. This once again is in the spirit of VIDE's overall vision.

Keeping above factors in mind, VIDE decided to support VHERDS' reconstruction effort of the hospital in Adhoi village. VHERDS inturn will be involving a local voluntary organisation which is active under the guidance and leadership of Sri Muktananda Bapuji for getting reconstruction done.

VIDE shall be supporting reconstruction of 5 rooms to the existing hospital, replacement of all metal furniture, beds, cabinets, etc., ambulance-cum-medical van, with stretchers, oxygen cylinders and other equipments, an X-ray machine and medical equipment and accessories for various prenatal and antenatal tests, childcare etc. The total cost comes to INR 22.5 lakhs. This shall be a 6 month project starting in January 2002.
