Distribution of Relief Materials (Picture Gallery)

Update as of 01/04/2005  (Picture Gallery)

Dear Vivek/Arvind/Avinash,

All the materials purchased/collected except the drinking water
cans have been dispatched to Tiruvarur. Dr.Gopalakrishnan would
receive the same on the 5th morning by 9 am. Arrangements have
been made to unload them and store them in a safe place.
The water cans would be dispatched to Tiruvarur within a couple
of days. ARC parcel service who are a leading
parcel service operator had undertaken the transport operations
at their cost. It had saved around Rs.7500 for us.

Taluks affected by Tsunami waves

Nagapattinam District:

Nagapattinam
Sirkali
Tarangambadi
Kilvelur
Vedaranyam

Cuddalore district

Cuddalore
Kattumannarkovil

Nagapattinam district has over 32 villages / fishermen hamlets and Cuddalore may have over 15 hamlets (at least). The number of families (mostly fishermen families) affected would be in the order of 25,000 or more. The respective District Collectors are not accessible for full information. Apparently both of them are busy.

I consulted a medical practitioner Dr.Gopalakrishnan who has been doing relief operations at Nagapattinam. Based on the consultation input and my own input I have estimated the  immediate requirement list as follows:

  1. Potable drinking water with container  (35 litre mineral water with container) - one
  2. Blankets – at least two blankets per family.
  3. Milk powder for feeding the infants – 1 kg
  4. Dry food item – cornflakes
  5. sugar – 1 kg
  6. Kerosene stove – one with 5 litres kerosene
  7. medicine – one bunch

I have spoken to Dr.Gopalakrishnan who has been co-coordinating the relief arrangements from Tiruvarur. He had interacted with the fishermen leaders. As per his assessment, in Nagapattinam region alone the number of families affected would come to 10,0000. Already he had obtained Rs.35 lakhs from Ramakrishana Mission which would be sufficient to cater to 5000 families. As per his scale each family would get materials worth Rs.500.

He had agreed to co-ordinate the distribution of relief materials.

Dr.Gopalakrishnan also had agreed to receive any donation through the charitable trust titled “Tiruvarur Indian Medical Association Charitable Trust” in which he is the Secretary. He had also agreed to allow  me full control and access to the donations received through me.

His Association  members who are all medical practitioners in that area would  provide the necessary logistics and support for proper distribution of the relief materials.

Dr.Gopalakrishnan can be reached at 91-9362736913 (Mobile)

As per the fund availability with VIDE, we can decide the number of families to be supported in Nagapattinam district. If we get more fund commitment, then we can proceed to other parts of Nagapattinam district and Cuddalore district as well.

Regards.
Umashankar
