Nevidya - J.V.Modi High School Reconstruction

The Gujarat Earthquake not only destroyed homes, but also collapsed innumerable buildings, hospitals and schools. VIDE partnered with Nevidya, Inc, A U.S based NGO to help in the reconstruction of the portions of a school damaged by the quake. The J.V.Modi High School is located in Savar Kundla, Bhavnagar District, in Gujarat. The school is primarily attended by students from the two towns of Savar and Kundla, although many children(about 200, out of 1500) also travel from neighboring towns. Most of the students attending the school come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and hence the need to rebuild was even more important than normal.

The aim of the project was to ensure that the section of the school that was most severely damaged by the earthquake was rebuilt as quickly as possible, so as to not inconvenience the students in the school, who were having to be accommodated into the relatively undamaged portions. As part of this project the following activities were undertaken:

  • repair existing classrooms

  • bring down 6 especially badly hit classrooms and build new ones on both ground and first floors, so the students can have comfortable studying space

  • construct a proper sanitation block on both the first and the second floors

VIDE agreed to fund Nevidya to the tune of $30,000, which is being used for building classrooms on the ground and first floors, and building a completely new sanitation block.
