Jan Shiksha - Jammu Vocational Training Project

Background:

Due to terrorist attacks a large number of residents of Kashmir valley were forced to move out of their homes and seek shelter in the refugee camps in Jammu. They live in appalling conditions and have no means of livelihood.

An average of 400 unemployed youngsters in age group of 20 to 30 years from each of the six refugee camps. These youngsters have dropped out of schools and are adrift, without any sense of direction. The youth living in these camps can seek gainful employment if they are given vocational training which will ultimately lead to their rehabilitation along with that of their families.

Plan Detail:

Employment for Youth

  • Computer training/Certification
  • Repair of household appliances namely TV/VCR, refrigerators, washing machines etc
  • Electrician training in transformers, UPS etc
  • Lab technician trained to be medical assistants
  • Fashion design/ Interior Design

Except for the electrical wiring and maintenance course, which is for a duration of 6 months, all other courses are for a duration of 1 year. This project has been designed in consultation with the director of Jan Shikshan Sansthan (HRD, Govt of India). The space for the entire training program will be made available by Human Resources Development, the rent is to be paid out of funds made available by us.

VIDE plans to sponsor the students for these courses which will include the course fee, cost of tools, books and stationary. The initial project is about USD15,000 per year for training 60 students.

Possible future projects:

Youth Development Programs:

To offer an opportunity for the holistic development of children, something they lack at present. The objectives are proposed to be achieved as follows:

  • Building a small library cum reading room. Library will primarily have books on academic subjects for the benefit of high school students and a few newspapers/ journals. Also guide books on various competitive exams.(Estimated Cost: Rs.14,000.00)
  • Starting a Computer Center : The center is intended to help youngsters to become familiar with the use of computers, an opportunity, which they lack at present. The objective is to equip them with rudiments of computers, to help them compete in the open market for admission to computer training institutes both in the private and public domain. There is a strong demand for this facility. (Estimated Cost: Later)
  • Sports Activity: Sports equipment to foster comradeship and help overall development of the youngsters, who do not have any exposure to any sports activity. ( Estimated Cost: Initial Rs.4,000.00 per camp; Recurring Rs.1,000 per anum per camp)
